Moelfre
lifeboat is famous throughout the world for the heroic deeds
of its crew since a life boat station was first established in the
village in 1830 - to date 37 medals have been awarded to members of
Moelfre lifeboat crew
Many rescues have been carried out including the Royal Charter
which was wrecked near Moelfre in 1859. Some 400 lives where lost -
the majority being gold prospectors returning from Australia. Legend
has it that the loss was so high because greed overcame some of the
passengers who refused to drop their gold and drowned. Their are
more sinister tales of murder and looting of survivors for the same
gold
The current lifeboat and station are state of the art and are well
worth a visit whilst staying in Moelfre |
